BITCOIN: MONEY FOR THE INTERNET GENERATION

History:

In November 2008, a paper was posted on the internet under the name Satoshi Nakamoto titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.
This paper detailed methods of using a peer-to-peer network to generate what was described as "a system for electronic transactions without relying on trust". In January 2009, the bitcoin network came into existence with the release of the first open source bitcoin client and the issuance of the first bitcoins, with Satoshi Nakamoto mining the first block of bitcoins ever (known as the "genesis block"), which had a reward of 50 bitcoins. The value of the first bitcoin transactions were negotiated by individuals on the bitcointalk forums with one notable transaction of 10,000 BTC used to indirectly purchase two pizzas delivered by Papa John’s.

On 6 August 2010, a major vulnerability in the bitcoin protocol was spotted. Transactions weren't properly verified before they were included in the transaction log or "block chain" which let users bypass bitcoin's economic restrictions and create an indefinite number of bitcoinsOn 15 August, the vulnerability was exploited; over 184 billion bitcoins were generated in a transaction, and sent to two addresses on the network. Within hours, the transaction was spotted and erased from the transaction log after the bug was fixed and the network forked to an updated version of the bitcoin protocol. This was the only major security flaw found and exploited in Bitcoin's history.

  • Will you ever accept <insert one of the above>? Maybe, if we can find a way around the potential fraud, or if you convince us you're not a fraudster (aka repeat customers!).
  • Can I put a $0.85 stamp and send you the money using letter mail? Yes if you really want to, but at YOUR OWN RISK. If it gets lost in the mail, too bad, we can't do anything for you. If we say we didn't get it, we didn't get it, no arguing. We highly recommend against it. Use something that can be tracked!
  • I live in/near Ottawa, can I deliver the money in person? Sure. The address on the form can be accessed mon-fri 7am-6pm. You can slide it under the office door (NOT THE FRONT BUILDING DOOR) if you want to remain anonymous. Or feel free to come in and say hi (usually someone is in the office mon-fri 9-5). The 3 hour rate guarantee does not apply for payments left outside of business hours.
  • You sent me the wrong amount of BTC/LTC/$CAD! for my CASH order. We only guarantee the posted rate when you place your order for 24 hours for cash in mail, and 3 hours for cash in person. After that we reserve the right to adjust the amounts based on current market conditions.
  • You sent me the wrong amount of BTC/LTC/$CAD! for my BILL PAYMENT order. We do not guarantee any rate for Bill Payment orders, since we have no way of knowing how many days it will take the banks to credit our account the money. Bill Payment orders are processed based on your specified preference; either IMMEDIATELY at the RATE when its received, or you can choose to have us HOLD your payment until you manually execute it at a rate of your liking. This setting can be found under the Bill Payment Preferences Page.
  • When I sell coins, how many confirmations are required before payment? We require only 1 confirmation.

Cash/XpressPost Frequently Asked Questions

  • When I sell coins, and receive cash via xpresspost, is there any guarantees? We guarantee that the package will make it to Canada Post and be assigned a Tracking Number. Canada Post (supposedly) guarantees delivery of said package once its in their system, however, should a package be mis-delivered by CP and not tracked down, there is nothing we can do. We will not re-send payment for lost/stolen/mis-delivered packages once they leave our hands. By choosing this payment option, YOU assume all risks.
  • Why won't you re-send cash for lost/stolen/mis-delivered packages? Because we have already been scammed by people claiming they never received their package (and thus, us trying to be nice and re-sending it and eating the cost on our side), when CP clearly has indicated that it was delivered to the correct address, and support ticket investigations have lead to confirmation of delivery.
  • When I sell coins, and receive cash via xpresspost, can I leave off my name as to remain semi-anonymous? By not including your name in the mailing address, we will mail it anyways, however you open yourself to further risk of package mis-delivery by Canada Post, and make it much harder to track down lost/stolen/misdelivered packages.
  • When I sell coins, and receive cash via xpresspost, can I get "Signature Required on Delivery"? Yes! If you would prefer signature required, simply indicate that in the mailing address section when you fill out the form, or if you dont think of it till after, simply send us an email and we will add the "Signature Required on Delivery" option.
  • When I sell coins, and receive cash via xpresspost, is there any insurance on the value? No, Canada Post does not allow insuring cash.
